Semester & Academic Year Programs

The London Study Centre is the heart of the Eckerd College study abroad program. Since 1970, when Eckerd College leased a 200-year-old Georgian row house from the Bedford Estates, over 1,500 students have called the Centre home.
Central Location
Only two blocks away from the British Museum and within walking distance of Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery, Covent Garden and Soho, the centre is in the best location in London.
Faculty Led
The program is led by a different Eckerd College faculty member each semester. This Faculty Director lives at the centre with the students and teaches two courses, the British Seminar and a course in his or her discipline. Other courses are taught by British faculty.
Courses
The British Seminar is a required course for all students. It provides students with a good historical and cultural overview of Britain. One week of travel during the semester is devoted to the content of this course.
- World-renowned galleries, such as the National Gallery, become the classroom in Art History: British Painting 1970-1960.
- Compare American and English writers in Anglo-American Perspectives.
- In Introduction to Contemporary British Politics, students visit the Houses of Parliament and the Inns of Court.
- Approximately ten plays are seen as a part of Theatre in London.
- One course is taught in the Faculty Director's discipline.
Transportation
The central location of the centre, along with the excellent public transportation system in Britain, makes day trips or longer excursions convenient. Oxford, Cambridge, Canterbury, Salisbury and Stonehenge are all within easy reach by train or bus.
Student Discounts
The rest of Europe is affordable and readily accessible to students, who travel to varied destinations during mid-semester break and excursion week.
Best Buy
Financial aid for students participating in the London program remains intact; students have full benefit of federal, state, and institutional aid, as well as the opportunity to continue to earn work study funds. In addition, students may purchase a six-month work permit for other work in and around London.
Requirements
Two academic area requirements may be satisfied, along with the global perspective.
Eligibility
Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors are eligible to apply.
