What is Optional Practical Training (OPT)?
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a 12 months work opportunity available to all F-1 visa students to complement their study and acquire work experience in the U.S.
When Can I do it?
OPT can be done part time while you are still in school, but it is recommended to use OPT after graduation. This post-completion OPT allows the student to remain in the U.S.A. legally working full-time for an additional year immediately after graduation.
What are the requirements?
A student must have completed one academic year in F-1 status (that's two semesters). The training must be directly related to the student's course of study, but does not have to be an integral part of the curriculum. The application is fairly simple but needs to be sent to the Department of Homeland of Security approximately 90 days prior to actually starting the internship. Plan ahead, download all documents below, and follow the step by step instructions included in the "OPT Application Guide" document. When you have completed the form and acquired all documents required, come to see us.
