Online Course Materials - Handouts Icon

Most Online Course Materials icons go to one document or web page. However, professors often want to provide various materials for students as the term progresses. These materials might be class notes, assignments, exemplary notes from prior students, work by peers for review or editing, etc. The Handouts icon provides an easy way for professors to do this without creating links on web page.

1. Create a folder on the “academics” (academics.eckerd.edu) server for these materials. You can add and remove documents at any time. (Click here for instructions on doing this via FTP (File Transfer Protocol). FTP Directions for Windows users.) You can create folders inside folders to further organize the material if you wish.
2. Use a browser to find the folder at http://academics.eckerd.edu/instructor/your_email_name
Copy or otherwise remember this web address (URL) for the folder.
3. Go to the main page to manage the Online Course Materials icons.
http://academics.eckerd.edu/cyberlyceum/ or go directly to http://academics.eckerd.edu/cyberlyceum/iconURL.php?icon=handouts
(You may need to enter your email user name and password.)
(4. If you went to the main site to manage Online Course Materials icons,
click on the “Handouts” icon in the right column of that page.)
5. Copy or paste that web address (URL) of the folder into the space provided for that course.
6. Be sure and click on the button to submit the new information.

Additional notes:
A. If you want to restrict access to everything in this folder, please contact the Director of Instructional Technology. It is easy for that person to do this. (This may be needed if the copyright permission is limited to students in your class.)
B. When students go to this folder, they will see a list of contents of this folder. If you wish to have a little nicer looking web page for this folder, please save the following web page to your computer and put it in the folder along with all other documents. Save the page at http://academics.eckerd.edu/cyberlyceum/Your_course/Handouts/index.php to your computer and then place it in the Handouts folder.
C. Students will need appropriate programs on their computers to read these documents unless the documents are web pages or PDF documents. For students using Windows computers, the OpenOffice programs are free and will allow students to read most documents. (Information about OpenOffice is located here.)
D. Students can edit these documents if they save them to their own computers. However, they cannot change the original documents in these folders.
