Posting Documents (FTP)
(WebCT provides an alternate, different way to post
materials)
What is this?
You can post documents that you create so that others can access
these from the Internet. The easiest way is to use FTP (file
transfer protocol) to post the documents. Once the documents are
posted by you (the author) others can use a browser to access
(read) what you have posted, but others cannot change the
documents.
How to do it?
The directions for posting are different for Mac and windows
users, but accessing is the same.
• Details here. If you use a Macintosh (Apple) computer to
post..
• Details here. If you use a Windows (Dell or
other brand) computer to post.
• Details here. Students access the materials in the same way, but
their access is different. They go to
http://academics.eckerd.edu/instructor/your_email_name/.....
• Details here. It is good to use folders for courses, web sites,
and organization.
What can you post?
You can post any electronic materials. this includes web pages,
PDF documents, pictures, PowerPoint presentations, Word documents,
excel spreadsheets, and short sound or video clips (video usually
takes up a lot of space on the server, so please check with IT
before posting anything more than a very brief segment.) You can
post links to other material on the Internet. If you are not the
author of the material, don't violate copyright rules. The library
staff can give you guidance about copyright laws.
Why post anything?
More and more people turn to the Internet for information. This
includes students in your classes, students who are considering
taking your course, prospective students, parents/friends/alumni of
the college, potential donors of resources, and people trying to
evaluate the educational Eckerd educational program.
By posting materials you can
• Give your students information which you can easily modify at
any time and they can obtain as soon as you post it from any
location that has a networked computer. (They probably can access
some materials from the browser on their cell phones.). You can
make notes from class available for them to study. You can post
exemplary work from their peers. You can post syllabi, class
schedules, requirements, grading policy, etc.
• Give students assignments. some professors post
1. Excel spreadsheets for students to complete,
2. questions for them to answer,
3. peer materials for them to edit,
4. art works or other important pictures for them to
examine,
5. sound clips in a foreign language
6. etc. You are limited only by your imagination
• Posted materials let others know of the exciting things that are
going on in your classes.
• Note: Another method should be used to
1. post student
grades,
2. post questions to be answered on-line,
3. obtaining student assignments in electronic form,
4. have students participate in on-line discussions or chat
rooms,
5. give access to electronic resources from the library,
Who can access the materials?
You can restrict who can access the materials.(Restricting Access) By default, anyone
in the world can access anything you post. However, the Director of
Instructional Technology will be happy to help you restrict access
in any way that you wish. the restricted access can be applied to
everything you post, to certain folders, and/or to certain
documents within certain folders. This restriction can be as
restrictive or general as you wish. Some common restrictions are
limiting access to members of the Eckerd community or limiting
access to students in your class. The latter restriction is often
needed to get permission to post some copyrighted materials.
