Novell
April 2006
Beginning on April 21, and continuing through the summer, we will
be upgrading the existing Novell system and implementing new
services with it.
These are just a few of the items on our agenda:
- Migrate to Netware 6.5
- Install a new Netware server in our alternate data-center.
- Have services on the remote server ready to take over in a
storm.
- Install a new ZENWorks server.
- Upgrade authentication services with Identity Manager
- Implement remote desktop management.
- Implement profile controls
- Implement workstation management and inventory
- Access to files from anywhere: NetStorage
Critical to our plan is hurricane preparedness: we will have a
server to take over at a remote location in case the server on
campus is removed from service during a storm. The backup system
will be refreshed nightly from the primary Novell server.
We are beginning work which will reduce the apparent number of
passwords you need to remember. Key technologies for this are
called Identity Manager and ZENWorks.
Then there are those computer repairs. What if the technician
could discover the problem from his desk? What if he could fix the
problem from his desk? That is what we are going to attempt over
the next few months. The system is called ZEN -- Zero Effort
Networking.
As part of the ZEN package, we will have patch and remote software
installation, workstation inventory and management, remote desktop
management, and something pretty nifty called Policy Distribution.
As part of remote management, basically, we will be able to see
what you see on your workstations, and fix things from our
workstations. We won't have the ability to see what you see on your
screen with this, but we will know what is on your computer. As
part of Policy Distribution, when you walk to another computer, all
your work, including your profile and not just your files, will
follow you. At first it will feel like big brother watching, but we
believe this system will give far greater safety to your data, and
much more flexibility to your working environment.
The ability to connect to the system from anywhere in the world
and get to your files is finally being implemented with NetStorage.
We have been working for several months with an incomplete version
of NetStorage, and a few of you have seen it and used it. The
migration to the new Netware 6.5 system will include a version of
NetStorage we feel is ready to offer to the campus for general use.
Access to NetStorage can be found under its\services\novell.
Instructions for using NetStorage is at http://www.eckerd.edu/its/services/netstorage.php.
