Thin Clients at Eckerd College
What in the world is a thin client?
Good question! The easiest way to think of a thin client is as a
computer without the pesky hard drive - serving everything you need
from a central server. So, you can still do everything you do on a
desktop PC, but you're doing it all on a remote station connected
to a server. There are enormous benefits to this type of computing:
your work is protected, secure, and isn't susceptible to the
dreaded crash. Additionally you can take your work with you to any
thin client on campus in your wallet! Smart cards allow you to
customize your desktop, store files, bookmarks and other settings -
it is like having your own personal computer in your back pocket or
purse.
Here at Eckerd we are using SunRays and they are
available in the following locations:
- Armacost Library
- CEC Cafe
- CEC West Lodge
- Triton's Pub
- Admissions
- Dormitory Lounges (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon,
Zeta)
Watch this space for other locations as they are added.

Smart Cards
SunRays are available for use without any password for web access.
This is called "kiosk mode." If you would like a personal desktop
to store files on -- such as Word Processing files, your bookmarks,
etc. you will want to request a smart card. With a smart card you
can login once and move your session from terminal to terminal
without logging in again.
Want one? Take a look at our Smart
Card information page.
