Instructors

Margaret Cooley, M.A.
Margaret is the Director of Public Programs at the Leadership Development Institute (LDI). Margaret has been one of our lead instructors since 1986. With an extensive background in career development and psychotherapy, Margaret is experienced in counseling, college teaching and consulting. She has designed and conducted numerous executive seminars with special interests in conflict management, teambuilding, interpersonal styles and decision making. Margaret received her degrees from Rhodes College and the University of Chicago and is a licensed clinician in the State of Florida.

Tim Flanagan, M.A.
Tim earned his M.A. at Ohio State University and worked in higher education for eight years before entering the Human Resource Development field in 1985. Tim is the Director of Custom Programs at LDI. Tim's experience includes leading the senior leadership development programs at the Harris Corporation, managing consulting services for Development Dimensions International and building the training program at AAA, Tampa. Just prior to joining LDI, Tim worked for Paradigm Learning where he was responsible for the customization and delivery of programs and design and development of new programs. Tim is a frequent presenter at professional conferences and has consulted with scores of leading national and international firms.

Jennifer Hall, Ph.D.
Jennifer Hall, a licensed clinical psychologist, spent five years as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Eckerd College. During that time, Jennifer worked with Eckerd's Leadership Development Institute (LDI), and joined LDI's staff full-time in 1999 as Director of Coaching. In 2002, she moved to Colorado Springs to join the Center for Creative Leadership as the Chief Assessor and Feedback Manager. Jennifer received her B.S. from Trinity College and her Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut.

Sal Capobianco, Ph.D.
Sal is the Director of Assessment and a Professor of Psychology at Eckerd College. His responsibilities with LDI include coordinating assessment, feedback activities and instruction in the Leadership Development Program and custom programs. He recently co-authored the Conflict Dynamics Profile®, a 360º assessment instrument that measures conflict behaviors. Sal received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University.

Peter Hammerschmidt, Ph.D.
Peter is a Professor of Economics and has been a member of the Eckerd College faculty since 1977. He has served as a Senior Trainer and Research Associate to LDI since 1984. He makes frequent public presentations on economics, leadership, decision-making and creative problem solving styles. His research interests and publications include Male/Female Management Diversity, Leadership traits, and Creative Problem Solving styles and team effectiveness. In 1984, he was the recipient of the Robert A. Staub Distinguished Professor of the Year Award. For five years Peter hosted the Economics segment of the Tampa Bay Today (NBC) television show. He is a graduate of Colorado State University.

Joseph D. Carella, Psy.D.
Joe is the Director of the College Counseling & Health Services. He has been at Eckerd College since 1995 and is an Executive Coach and Instructor for LDI, as well as an adjunct professor of psychology. He is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the area of sport psychology working with professional and collegiate athletes. Joe works with Player Development Programs for the National Football League (NFL) and has served as a facilitator for the NFL Rookie Symposium. Other areas of interest and practice include psychodynamic psychotherapy with adults and couples. Joe earned his B.A. from Fairfield University, his Psy.D. from Nova University, and completed his post- doctoral fellowship at the University of Rochester.

Peter Vagg, Ph.D.

Peter has been in independent practice in the Tampa Bay Area in Florida since 1983. He was a faculty member at Long Island University, the University of South Florida, and Assistant Director of the Center for Research in Community Psychology. Peter completed a master's degree in psychology and a teaching degree in Melbourne, Australia, where he also worked on a personnel selection for the Royal Australian Air Force. He was one of the A Top Ten when completing his education degree and obtained a position teaching psychology at the University of Melbourne.

Maria Valdes, Ph.D.
Maria has worked as a consultant for the Center for Creative Leadership since 1983 and has done over 1,500 individual feedback sessions. Although individual feedback sessions are her first love, coaching managers follows as a close second. She also developed a coaching for development module, which she teaches regularly. Maria has an Organizational Consulting Practice and conducts teambuilding, life planning, managing differences and diversity workshops. She has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in psychology, counseling and testing. Maria Valdes obtained her Bachelor's in Psychology, and her Master's and Ph.D. in counseling from the University of Florida. Prior to being a full time organizational consultant, Dr. Valdes was the Director of Human Resources for the Denver Department of Social Services for ten years and supervised a staff of 47 people. Prior to that, she supervised all the testing for entry-level and promotions for police and fire fighters in the City and County of Denver.

Frank R. "Chip" Wood, Ph.D.
Chip is an independent management consultant with extensive experience working in, consulting with and leading large, action oriented organizations. He has taught or managed leadership programs in a variety of prestigious organizations including: the Air Force Academy, Industrial College of the Armed Forces, National War College, U.S. Postal Service Management Academy, Foreign Service Institute, Disney University, the Eckerd College Leadership Development Institute, the University of Maryland National Leadership Institute and the Center for Creative Leadership. His consulting focuses on: developing managers, management teams and intact work teams; strategic planning; managing organizational change; and stimulating innovation. Among his many publications is an internationally recognized book on significant organizational changes in the U.S. military and eight other countries.
