How To Find Books
The web-based online catalog can be searched either on or off
campus from any Internet connection. Finding books is the first of
several steps in the research process. If you can not find a
particular book or any books on your topic, please consult with a
librarian for research assistance.
Searching the Catalog
The catalog is accessed by clicking on the Catalog
link at library home page. The default search screen is the
Basic Search. To perform a search, enter your
search terms in the first text box.
For a Keyword search, enter a few terms that
describe your subject, such as "child psychology" "air pollution"
or "marine mammals diseases". The menu on the right automatically
highlights "Keyword Search".
For a Title search, enter a few words from the
title and choose "Title Keyword" from the menu on the right
OR enter the exact title and choose "Exact Title"
from the menu.
For an Author search, "enter the last name
first followed by the first name. Choose "Author
Browse" from the menu.
For a Subject search, enter the Library of
Congress Subject Heading and choose "Subject Browse" from the
menu.
You may also limit the search by using the "Quick
Limit" menu. You may limit the search to only books
published within the last ten years, to only videos, to only
Reference books, or to only periodical titles.
Keyword searches will display 50 records at a time (arranged in
order of relevance). The item's location, call number, and status
are displayed in the yellow box below each title. For additional
information about the item, click on the title
Browse searches will display in an alphabetical list. To view
titles associated with the entry, click the blue number in the far
left row.
Navigation Buttons
Every catalog screen has a row of navigation buttons
across the top. The buttons link to other catalog and library
services.
Databases: links to the list of library
subscription databases including indexes and full-text resources of
journal and magazine literature.
Search: links to the catalog's Basic search screen.
Headings, Titles: links to a list of subject
headings or titles in the current search.
Patron: allows you to view your personal library
information (books checked out, fines, etc.).
Login: enter your barcode number and name once per
search session to check your patron information multiple times
without having to login each time.
Request: allows you to hold a book (pick it up at
the Circulation Desk) or recall a book (returns the book if it's
checked out)
History: links to a list of searches performed in
a single session.
Remote: links to a list of other library catalogs
(including local libraries).
Help: offers a variety of files to assist you in
using the catalog.
Library: links to the library home page.
Exit: disconnects from the current search session
and returns to the library home page.
