Welcome to Dave's World (That's Henderson, Not Barry)

In the immortal
words of Willie Mays - say hey everyone! Boy, does that date me or what!? Much as it galls
me to admit, I am (and have been for a long time) the senior member of the library staff,
having joined the Eckerd faculty in the summer of '74. (Does that last phrase
remind anyone of an old rock and roll song? It should.) Currently, I am coordinator for
collection management and bibliographic instruction - or, in simpler language, I oversee
the selection and purchase of library materials (mostly books) and help teach people how
to use them. (By the way, I am always happy to receive suggestions for additions to the
collection.)
After having spent my first twenty-one years in Connecticut, I came to Florida in 1969 to work as a VISTA volunteer, helping to set up a half-way house for pre-delinquent teens and getting to attend one of those post-Woodstock three days-in-the-mud rock festivals (Janus and the Winters jamming one afternoon remains one of my most vivid memories). In spite of the travails associated with the VISTA project, I immediately became enamored of the sun and sand and haven't left since - other than for vacation trips.
Indeed, traveling is one of my favorite pastimes -
from North Cape (Norway) to Nigeria, from Crete to Colorado. London is one of my special
loves, and I encourage anyone who has the chance to spend a semester there to do so. And
while you are there, be sure to check out the cricket at Lord's or the Oval. When you return,
think about joining the Eckerd College Cricket
Club - an organization I helped found several years ago. Even if you have no
actual playing experience, we can soon teach you the difference between a yorker and a
googlie (ala Jerry Seinfeld).
As the library's chief book buyer, I read thousands of book reviews each year. You might think I'd get my fill having to read all these reviews - but, noooo, not only do I read 'em, I write 'em. For the past fifteen years I have been a regular reviewer for Library Journal and in that time have written over 150 reviews - from Thomas Pynchon's latest (Mason & Dixon) to Alan Hollinghurst's first (The Swimming Pool Library).
And speaking of swimming, it is one of my passions (along with the Cleveland Indians, Cavaliers and Browns - yes, I know, but the Browns will be back!). Since I began keeping track in the mid 1980's, I have logged more than 600 miles in the Eckerd pool. After another 600, I figure I can think about retiring.

Well...enough about me! What about you? Please feel free to stop by and chat anytime, or e-mail or call. Hope to see you soon. For now, adios, auf wiedersehen, so long. (Let's see how many of you pick up on that one!)
