Circulation Q&A

HOW LONG MAY BOOKS BE CHECKED OUT?

Students, Staff, Faculty, Alumni, ASPEC, Friends, USF card holders may check books out for three weeks with two renewals unless a hold has been placed on a book, in which case it may not be renewed. All books will be due at the end of each semester or term even if it less than three weeks away. ELS students may check books out until three days prior to the end of each term. Elderhostel guests may check books out for one week or until the Friday departure.

HOW MANY BOOKS MAY BE CHECKED OUT?

The central mission of the Eckerd College Library is to support the curricular and research needs of Eckerd College Students and faculty. In light of this mission, it is the library's responsibility to ensure that students and faculty receive priority when it comes to using the resources of the library. It is with this responsibility in mind that the following check-out limitations are placed on non-Eckerd student/faculty borrowers (in all cases the maximum number of check-outs allowable at any one time): Alumni: 5 books, ASPEC members (not involved in teaching a course): 5 books, Friends: 5 books, Staff (including ELS and Elderhostel/Senior College Faculty): 5 books, ELS students: 3 books, Elderhostel guests: 3 books, and USF cardholders: 5 books. Individuals wishing exceptions to these limits must apply to the Collection Management Librarian.

Students may have 25 items (including reserve materials) checked out at any one time .

IF I FAIL TO RETURN A BOOK BY THE DUE DATE, WILL I OWE A FINE?

Yes. The charge for overdue materials will now be 25 cents per day. However, as we are more interested in materials being returned or renewed than we are in fining library users, patrons will be given a grace period of 10 days in which to return overdue items.* No fines will be assessed if the item is returned within this 10 day period - unless the item has been requested by another patron, in which case a Recall notice will be issued and the item will become subject to immediate return. Once the grace period has passed, fines will be assessed and will accrue from the date the item was first due, i.e., on day 11 you would owe $2.75, with another 25 cent charge being added each day thereafter.

While patrons are responsible for keeping track of the due dates of items they borrow, the library will issue a first overdue notice three days after the due date. As this is well within the grace period, it is intended to help you avoid a fine. A claim that a notice was not received, however, does not constitute justification for failure to return or renew an item before fines are assessed.*

Second and third notices will also be sent, if necessary. If the materials have not been returned or renewed within ten days of the date of the third notice (or within one week of commencement), a replacement fee , which will vary depending upon the nature of the material, and a processing fee of $10.00 per item, will also be charged to your account. The replacement fee is refundable if the item is returned before it has been reordered or its record has been withdrawn from the catalog. The processing fee is normally not refundable.

Patrons with excessive unpaid overdue fines or lost book charges may be barred from further borrowing. These privileges may be restored only upon payment of any fees owed or at the discretion of a professional librarian.

Any questions relating to overdues and/or fines should be referred to the circulation supervisor or to a professional librarian.

HOW CAN I DETERMINE IF MY BOOKS ARE OVERDUE OR IF I OWE FINES?

The library will periodically send notices to patrons regarding the status of overdue fines and/or replacement charges. It is, however, the responsibility of each patron to keep track of due dates via the Web Voyáge catalog interface. To access your information from Web Voyáge, click on the Patron Icon at the top of the screen and enter your barcode number from your ID card and last name. How many books you have checked out, when they are due back, and the fines (if any) you owe will be displayed.

As with charges, all refunds will be handled through the business office and will appear on your fee bill.

WHAT ABOUT FINES FOR RESERVE BOOKS AND VIDEO TAPES

The fine for reserve materials is $1.00 per hour to a maximum of $10.00. Video tapes held beyond their three day check-out period are subject to a $1.00 per day fine to a maximum of $10.00 after which the replacement/processing/catalog fees described above will apply.

WHERE DO I PAY THESE OVERDUE CHARGES?

All fines will be charged to your student account and will appear on the fee bill you receive from the college. You should not pay any money directly to the library.

WHOM SHOULD I SEE IF I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT FINES CHARGED AGAINST ME OR IF I HAVE LOST A BOOK?

The Circulation Supervisor whose desk is located in the circulation area.

WHAT IF I NEED A BOOK THAT IS CHECKED OUT?

You may place a hold on an item that someone else has checked out. When it is returned, you will be notified and the item held for you for up to five days.

WHAT DO I DO IF I'VE LOST OR DAMAGED A BOOK?

Report it to the circulation desk as soon as possible so that you will not accumulate additional daily fines. You will be charged for replacement or repair costs, and depending on the particular circumstances, a processing/cataloging fee

REMEMBER- THE EASIEST WAY TO AVOID FINES AND THEIR ACCOMPANYING PROBLEMS IS TO RETURN OR RENEW MATERIAL WHEN IT IS DUE.
