Brittany Mitchell '15, Kara Oberer '16 Land Daktronics Softball All-South Region Honors

posted on 05/13/2013

Eckerd College freshman Kara Oberer '16 and sophomore Brittany Mitchell '15 both collected postseason honors as members of the Daktronics Softball All-South Region Team.

Mitchell and Oberer both earned well-deserved second-team status at the shortstop and designated player positions, respectively.

Voting was determined by a combined poll from sports information directors in the Sunshine State Conference, Gulf South Conference and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The regional announcement comes shortly after freshman Kaycie Duncan '16 was honored as a member of the All-SSC Second Team.

"Kara had an outstanding season and it's great to see her get some recognition," said EC Head Coach Josh Beauregard '03. "It's very nice to have both Kara and Brittany recognized and we're looking forward to what we're going to do next year."

Both Mitchell and Oberer flourished with the Tritons this past spring under the leadership of Beauregard.

Mitchell hit at a .267 clip and was penciled in the starting lineup for all 56 games possible. She drove in 27 runs on 44 hits and recorded five doubles.

Early in the season, Mitchell assembled a six-game hitting streak and provided several multi-hit efforts against SSC and non-conference competition. She also saw action in the pitcher's circle as additional depth for the EC rotation.

Oberer was designated as the SSC Player of the Week in two separate voting periods and went on to lead the conference in home runs and slugging percentage while flashing impressive defensive leather as a vocal leader of the middle infield.

Oberer belted 12 home runs in her first year at the collegiate level, including three in her first two games to begin the year at Ave Maria University. Her 42 runs scored in a single season ranks second all-time in school history.

Among career leaders in home runs, Oberer's name is already near the pinnacle of all-time greats in the program. She trails only Amy McGathey (13) by one homer and Sherry Howell (29) at the top going into the spring of 2014.
