Gloria Steinem is one of the most influential writers, editors, and activists of our time. She co-founded Ms. Magazine, the Women's Action Alliance, the National Women's Political Caucus, Voters for Choice, Choice USA, the Ms. Foundation for Women and its Take Our Daughters to Work Day, and the Women's Media Center. The author of several bestsellers, she is currently at work on Road to the Heart: America As if Everyone Mattered, a book about her more than thirty years on the road as a feminist organizer.

Dorothy Pitman Hughes, a child care activist and community organizer, founded the New York City Agency for Child Development. In 1971, along with Gloria Steinem, Brenda Feigen and Catherine Samuels, she co-founded the Women's Action Alliance. During the years surrounding the birth of Ms. Magazine, Ms. Hughes and Ms. Steinem appeared at hundreds of public meetings across the country. Ms. Hughes is the author of Wake Up and Smell the Dollars! Whose Inner-City Is This Anyway!

Amy Richards and Jennifer Baumgardner are co-authors of both Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism, and the Future and Grassroots:A Field Guide for Feminist Activism. Ms. Richards co-founded Third Wave Foundation and is currently at work on Opting In, a forthcoming book on feminism and motherhood. Ms. Baumgardner was the youngest editor at Ms. Magazine. Her most recent book Look Both Ways: Bisexual Politics, explores gender, sexuality, and feminism.

 

Fun fact

Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes spoke at Eckerd, then Florida Presbyterian College, in December 1971. Their talk was entitled "Sexism and Racism" and was part of the Christian Faith and Great Issues series.
