Everyone knows that maintaining a regular exercise program is very important to your long-term health and resistance to age-related conditions. What better way to keep fit than by taking part in outdoor physical activities with other OLLI members?
The Tampa Bay area is rich in outdoor exercise options. The 34-mile long Pinellas Trail offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. It stretches from St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs, connecting scenic parks, quiet neighborhoods, and gorgeous waterfronts along its green corridor.
Our region is also a beautiful place to kayak. Kayaking is a great way to manage your weight, tone your upper body, and reduce stress. Did you know that you burn up nearly 400 calories hourly when you kayak at five miles per hour? You can expect to do 500 strokes per mile, incorporating every muscle in your upper body and some lower body muscles as well. Spending a few hours under the sky, on the water, is a great way to experience the beauty of nature and to relax. These are just a couple of possibilities. Join us at our planning meeting to share your ideas.

1838 Up County Writer’s Circle
Tuesdays, April 8, 22, and May 13, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
Facilitator: Salome Harasty
Have you taken one of OLLI’s courses in poetry writing, writing your memoirs, or other forms of creative writing? Are you feeling a desire to share your work and receive some gentle critiquing? Perhaps some exercises to inspire your creativity would be enjoyable. Joining the Writer’s Circle might interest you. A circle expresses wholeness, oneness, a joining together as equals to share the truth of our lives. It is a safe place to speak as well as to listen, a place where your writing can receive constructive and encouraging attention. A writer’s circle nourishes you and your writing. Attendance is voluntary, but commitment is encouraged. Circle facilitators will guide the work of the Circle. Occasional guest authors and poets will be encouraged to attend and share brief thoughts on writing. Bring a bag lunch.

1839 Writer’s Circle
Every Tuesday, October 7,
running through December 9,11:00 am - 1:00 pm
Facilitator: Shirley Wilson
Whether you are an accomplished writer or just beginning to write, you can join Writer’s Circle – a small community of writers who encourage, advise, and inspire each other in the writing of prose and poetry. A circle expresses wholeness, oneness, a joining together as equals to share the truth of our lives. Each member has opportunities to read aloud a completed work or a work in progress. Listeners respond with constructive and encouraging comments. Facilitators share information about seminars, conferences, and other writing opportunities. Guest speakers occasionally join the group to share their ideas about writing. We take a brief break to enjoy a snack and converse. Each Writer’s Circle is limited to 20 OLLI members so that each participant has adequate time to present material and respond to the writings of others.

1840 OLLI Chorus
Facilitator: Joan Karins
Wednesdays, October 8th – December 10, 7:00 pm
If you used to sing, are singing now, or would like to sing, the OLLI Chorus is for you. You will learn good vocal technique and refine your music reading skills. The aim is to have a group that strives for a good ensemble which is satisfying and enjoyable for performers and audiences alike. Joan Karins, Chorus Coordinator, is a member of an a capella singing group which offers concerts around the Tampa Bay Area. She has directed various musical ensembles since high school, and for ten years she was the children’s choir director at her church.
After listening to suggestions from the group, the director will choose the music. Some of the selections will be serious, some lighter. Participants will be expected to purchase music, which will be available at rehearsals. The chorus will perform for OLLI events and explore other venues. A desire to learn and a love of singing, even in the shower, are all that are required to join.

1841 New Horizons Band at Eckerd College
Want to join the band?
If you have never played a musical instrument, or did in the past but are out of practice now, here is your opportunity to join a “New Horizons Band” at Eckerd College.
There are presently over 100 of these bands around the country. The New Horizons program is especially designed for musicians or “would be” musicians over 50 years of age. Its message is simple: “You are never too old to learn to play a musical instrument.”
The New Horizons Band concept was launched by Professor Roy Ernst at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. Professor Ernst believed that older adults have the time and motivation to develop musical skills rapidly. He also found that performing music can improve health and quality of life, and that for many of the band members the weekly rehearsals have become welcome social events.
The New Horizons Band program at Eckerd College is directed by Professor David Irwin of the Music Department faculty. The band meets for two hours each week: one hour for instruction and one hour for group rehearsal. Arrangements have been made with a local music store for rental of instruments if you do not own one. This rental program is flexible in that it will allow you to switch instruments, discontinue, or apply rental to purchase.
An informational meeting will be held at Eckerd College in the Pelican Room of the Continuing Education Center on Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at 7:00 pm. At this meeting, we will introduce Professor Irwin, Eckerd College Music Coordinator, who will be one of the instructors in the program. After a 10-minute video describing New Horizons, a speaker from Bringe Music in St. Petersburg will speak briefly about Bringe’s musical instrument rental program. This will be followed by a question and answer period and a chance to sign up for the program if you decide to join. Instruction and practice will start one week later on Tuesday, April 15, at 7:00 pm, and will continue through June 10.
Cost: $75 for ASPEC and OLLI members, and Eckerd College Alumni; Non-members: $85; (plus supplies, and optional instrument rental)
