3897 An Aviator's Life

3897 An Aviator's Life
Presenter: Captain David "Mac" McLay
Thursday, January 19; 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Captain David "Mac" McLay shares a personal history - from RAF cadet flights during schooldays in the North of England, to immigration and a tour of duty with the US Air Force, and a 26-year international flying career with Pan American World Airways. His insights and anecdotes span six decades, from World War II to the fall of the Berlin Wall and beyond. He will be discussing Pan Am's pioneering round-the-world route expansion, the introduction of turbojet airliners, and what were - arguably - the closing years of the "Golden Era of Commercial Aviation."  (Due to recent in-flight cabin service cutbacks throughout the airline industry, luncheon will be served following arrival at the airport terminal). Sit back now, and enjoy your Jet Clipper flight!

3898 Florida Aviation History

3898 Florida Aviation History
Presenter: Warren Brown
Thursday, February 9; 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

On January 1, 1914, just over ten years after the Wright Brothers' first flight, pilot Tony Jannus and passenger Abe Pheil took off from downtown St. Petersburg on the world's first regularly scheduled commercial airline flight.  Dr. Warren Brown, author and founding member of the Florida Aviation Historical Society shares stories about that historic event and others as he describes the rich history of flight in our area.  You'll be surprised at how important Florida, and even the Tampa Bay area, has been to the development of aviation since the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line began almost 100 years ago.

3899 Airport: The Important Asset in the Community

3899 Airport: The Important Asset in the Community
Presenter: Jack Tunstill
Thursday, February 9; 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

You want to travel to grandmother's home for the holidays or a family event. You have a choice to use the personal car or a public mode of transportation. If you drive, maybe it is two days. If  you fly, it may be two hours or less. Everyone knows someone who travels by air rather than by automobile. Every flight starts at an airport. There are several types of airports. One is Tampa International Airport which the major airlines service. The other is a General Aviation Airport like Albert Whitted Airport.

Our lecturer, Jack Tunstill, is a well-respected member of the Albert Whitted aviation community who will discuss the post World War II history of Albert Whitted and its relationship to the National Air Transportation System. A citizen of St. Petersburg, he has an ownership share of this historic airport. It is unique among the nations' airports with its location on the waterfront. The Airport forms an important element in the preservation of the City's waterfront legacy.
