Berlin. 1931. In the outside world of the Weimar Republic, the Nazi rise to power is omnipresent and threatening. Inside the seedy Kit Kat Klub, cabaret performer Sally Bowles, a young American in search of a rich husband, performs suggestive musical numbers. She befriends Brian, a penniless young British man studying in Berlin and teaching English. They meet and have involvements with rich Max whose marital arrangement allows him and his wife the freedom to enjoy the pleasures of many lovers. Subplots echo the nervous anxiety surrounding the racial and ethnic issues of the era. Dramatic intensity increases as the Nazi philosophy gains public acceptance, becomes more pervasive, and insidiously infiltrates and influences the life of the bohemian cabaret crowd.

On campus lecture and lunch. Eckerd bus to freeFall Theatre for the performance.

Located in Bradenton, South Florida Museum is the largest natural and cultural history museum on Florida's Gulf Coast.

Our first stop will be a private presentation at the Parker Manatee Aquarium, located in the South wing of the South Florida Museum. It is part of Florida's Manatee Rehabilitation Network and is home to Manatee County's most famous resident and official mascot, "Snooty" the manatee, the oldest known living manatee who will be 64 on July 19th.The Aquarium, designed to house three adult manatees, holds nearly 60,000 gallons of water. The pool offers both deep and shallow water, allowing the manatees to maintain natural feeding behaviors. An exhibit area within the facility helps to educate the public about manatee anatomy, physiology and habitat, and provides above and below water viewing.

After the presentation we'll take a docent tour of the museum dedicated to the history and prehistory of Florida. The museum interprets the region from the Pleistocene to the present. Highlights include fossil evidence of Florida's earliest mammals and marine species and the Montague Tallant collection of prehistoric and early post-contact archeological artifacts. Recently opened is the Environmental Wing focusing on Florida's ecology and biodiversity in the Pine Uplands and Riverine Galleries. Other exhibits cover local history and maritime traditions, early 20th-Century medical practices and a visible storage gallery featuring some of the museum's unique collections. Spanish Plaza has full-scale replicas of a 16th-Century manor house, chapel and conquistador Hernando DeSoto's birthplace.

After lunch, we will have some time to peruse the museum's gift shop before a private screening of the "Ultimate Universe" in the Bishop Planetarium, located in the North Wing of the South Florida Museum. The planetarium is a multipurpose domed theater, boasting an all-digital projection system. Incorporating unidirectional stadium style seating, high definition DVD,TV, and PowerPoint projection, and a digital 25,000 watt Dolby 5.1 surround sound system, the Bishop is capable of accommodating a wide range of programs.

Working closely with Lowry Park Zoo's critical care hospital for manatees, the Parker Manatee Aquarium is a second stage rehabilitation facility. A second stage facility provides a temporary home for manatees that will be released back into the wild after having received treatment from an acute care hospital. The Aquarium has housed fourteen manatees as part of its rehab program.

Where do you turn to hear bluegrass, Celtic music, Latin jazz and salsa? Where can you hear lectures on Buddhism, current events, alternative health, and sustainable living? The answer is 88.5 FM:WMNF.

WMNF first went on the air in September, 1979, the result of a few years of hard work by a small group of dedicated volunteers who went door-to-door raising money for Florida's first community radio station. It is the late 19th Century. Victorian mores dictate. A new treatment for female maladies is heralded. A young wife longs for a good relationship with her husband. He, a gynecologist, is obsessed with a new technological wonder to ease his female patients of hysteria. The wife listens at the door of her husband's home office and hears the patients' sounds of relief as they receive treatment. She longs for the same. Via a black wet nurse she comes to understand how to achieve what her sex life is missing.

Nominated for three Tony awards, this play focuses on the era's ignorance of female sexual desire, motherhood, breast feeding and other gender issues. It is provocative and funny as it explores the technological solution to women's sexual problems in marriage.

Warm Mineral Springs is a 1.4-acre, 230 feet deep hourglass shaped cenote connected to the Floridian aquifer. The Springs is the only warm mineral spring in Florida. It produces over nine million gallons per day of new waters, coming from over 3,000 feet deep in the ground, infused with the richest density of minerals of any known warm water spring in the world. The chemical analysis of the 87-degree Fahrenheit waters reveal total minerals of 17,439 parts per million. This is many times the mineral content of such famed international spas as Vichy and Aix Les Bains in France, Hot Springs in Arkansas, and Baden Baden in Germany. Warm Mineral Springs' mineral density results in high buoyancy, which facilitates movement for those who otherwise suffer impairments, and permits them to partake in strengthening, stretching, and increasing aerobic activity.

This historical site, listed in the National Register of Historical Places, has been described by the Smithsonian Institute as "one of the most important underwater archaeological sites in America."

After a brief orientation at the Springs and a lecture about the location's natural history we will take part in a water exercise class.

A healthful lunch will be served at Cafe Evergreen, located on site at the springs.

After lunch, you'll have free time to soak in the springs and marvel at the smoothing effect of the water on your skin. There will also be time (until 3:00 pm) to take advantage of the services of Spa Donya, where "therapists bring together traditional European therapies, ancient techniques from Asia and minerals indigenous to Warm Mineral Springs' Miracle Water." Spa services, not included in the price of today's trip, are described on the Springs' website: warmmineralsprings.com. Be sure to reserve the services in advance by calling Spa Donya at 941.426.7692.

Participants should take sunscreen and a towel. Swim shoes and swim noodles are also recommended. A lifeguard patrols the perimeter of the springs. The center, deeper region is roped off and swimming there is at your own risk. The children's area provides a great setting for the exercise class and for entering and exiting the spring.

Cost includes transportation, admission, lecture, water exercise class, and lunch. Cost does not include spa services.

Established by then-Mayor Bob Martinez in 1986, the Mayor's Hispanic Advisory Council's founding mission was to serve as a liaison between the Hispanic community and local city government. The roots of the council stem from a task force whose purpose was to increase the Hispanic representation in the City of Tampa's Police Department.

Over the past years, the MHAC has pioneered several initiatives on behalf of the city of Tampa for the benefit of the Hispanic community and beyond. Through meetings with community leaders, the MHAC has been instrumental, for example, in attaining greater representation of Spanish-speakers in city services, in entities such as the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, and bilingual signage at Tampa International Airport. The MHAC is comprised of volunteers appointed by the Mayor who serve as liaisons between the city government and the Hispanic community.

The Latinos Unidos Luncheon is an annual MHAC event to showcase the rising influence and economic impact of Hispanics in the Tampa Bay area, Florida and beyond. Proceeds of the event are designated for local Hispanic students with financial need attending Hillsborough Community College, the University of South Florida or the University of Tampa through MHAC endowments established at these institutions. With attendance in excess of four hundred each year, the Latinos Unidos Luncheon is one of the most successful Hispanic events in the area. It is attended by a diverse audience of business and community leaders.

This year's keynote speaker is Frank Unanue, President, Goya Foods of Florida. Mr. Unanue is responsible for all distribution center operated by Goya Foods of Florida.

Join us for an interesting luncheon to learn about our local Hispanic community and invest in the future of local Hispanic students.

3950CE Historic Deland, Florida: Athens of Florida *

3950CE Historic Deland, Florida: Athens of Florida *
Wednesday, May 30
7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Have you ever wondered how Gulfport came to be the second home for Florida's first law school, Stetson? Perhaps we'll be able to find out more about that move on our trip to its original home in Deland, a community that serves as the county seat and is known for its historic architecture, Florida's first private college (now known as Stetson University), and the Museum of Florida Art.

Once known as Persimmon Hollow and only accessible by steamboat up the St. John's River, Deland is often referred to as the Athens of Florida, and we're going to check out why. Among the cast of characters we will learn more about are Henry Addison Deland and John B. Stetson who invested both emotionally and financially in the founding and development of Deland, but never made it their permanent residence.

Upon our arrival in Deland, our personable and enthusiastic tour guide has a full day planned for us that begins with a complete tour of the Stetson Mansion, meditation garden, and grounds. This will be followed by a delicious lunch at Cook's Buffet, Café and Bakery, where the challenge will be to avoid their wonderful homemade desserts.

After lunch we will head to Elizabeth Hall on the Stetson University campus for a mini pipe organ concert, followed by a bus tour of downtown Deland that will focus on the beautiful outdoor murals, as well as other street art. Before heading back to St. Petersburg, we will tour the rotunda of the restored Volusia County Courthouse and a gallery of legendary Florida Art by Jackson Walker.
