Family Weekend 2013

February 22-24, 2013

Register NowCalling all cool cats out there! Join us February 22-24 for Jazz Fest at Eckerd. The weekend promises to be the "Bee's Knees" and will officially begin at 3 pm on Friday and will wind down by 1:30 pm on Sunday. 

It's $65 "clams" per person to register, and each registration includes several meals, all of the activities, and a t-shirt! Register Now!

Faculty Panel: The Liberal Arts Live!
Wrenn Hall, James Center for Molecular and Life Sciences
Dean of Faculty Suzan Harrison will moderate a panel of Eckerd College faculty as they share their thoughts on the value of the liberal arts education, internships, and the faculty-student mentoring relationship.

Environmental Film Festival 
Miller Auditorium
Heading into its 15th year, the Visions of Nature, Voices of Nature Environmental Film Festival has brought compelling and important films to the Tampa Bay area and the Eckerd College community in order to raise awareness and promote discussion of questions relating to nature, place, and the environment. Film scholars and filmmakers from around the world engage the audience in lively discussions of the environmental perspectives contained in documentary, animated, experimental and feature films.

Eco-Horror: The Bay
Director, Barry Levinson (USA, 86m, 2012)
Approached to make a documentary about the Chesapeake Bay, acclaimed director Barry Levinson found that no one seemed to care how polluted it was, so he decided to modify the footage he had already captured and create a real-life horror story.

Presented by Dr. Catherine Griggs, Associate Professor of American Studies, founder and co-director of the Environmental Film Festival.

Rare Humanity: Contact
Director, Bentley Dean and Martin Butler (Australia, 78m, 2009)

In 1964, a group of twenty Martu women and children--aboriginal people who had never before seen whites were encountered in the Great Sandy Desert of Australia. This remarkable film includes not only documentary footage of that first contact, but also recent interviews with several members of the original Martu group, who poignantly describe the encounter of 1964 and its profound impact on their lives.

Presented by Dr. James Deutsch, program curator at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage and adjunct professor of American studies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
