Family Weekend 2014

February 21-23, 2014

Register NowFamily Weekend! Join us February 21-23 at Eckerd. The weekend officially begins at 4:30 pm on Friday and will wind down by 2:00 pm on Sunday. 

It is $65 per person to register, and each registration includes several meals, all of the activities, and a t-shirt! Register Now!

Friday, February 21

"John Eckert and His Students" | 10:30 am – 4:30 pm
A Tribute to John Eckert '69 as Artist and Teacher Cobb Gallery 
This exhibition pays tribute to John Eckert (1947-1987) as a ceramist, painter, photographer and printmaker, and also features recent work by some of his students, among them Joy Brown '72, Bede Clarke '83, Susan Demay '77, Ben Dimmitt '76, Scott Estes '86, Stanton Hunter '80, Kelly Mills '78, Beth Mueller '77, Ruth Huebner Seib '79, and Melanie Taylor '74.

Please join us for light refreshments and a chance to meet some Eckerd faculty. The Eckerd College Parent’s Council also will be in attendance at this event.

Hough Quad
There are over 80 clubs and organizations on the Eckerd College campus for students to join. This evening, enjoy strolling through Hough Quad and learning more about these clubs. A picnic-style dinner will be served during this event.

7:00 pm |Environmental Film Festival
Miller Auditorium
Heading into its 16th year, the Visions of Nature, Voices of Nature Environmental Film Festival has brought compelling and important films to the Tampa Bay area and the Eckerd College community in order to raise awareness and promote discussion of questions relating to nature, place, and the environment. Film scholars and filmmakers from around the world engage the audience in lively discussions of the environmental perspectives contained in documentary, animated, experimental and feature films.

More Journeys of Exploration: Expedition to the End of the World
Director Daniel Dencik (Denmark, English and Danish, 90min 2013)

An expedition of Danish scientists, artists and explorers travels in an old-fashioned vessel to investigate uncharted fjords in Greenland that are only recently becoming accessible due to the climate change. The film combines humor and reflection, beautiful imagery and punk rock, to create an unforgettable encounter with the end of the world.

Presented by Dr. James Deutsch, program curator at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage and adjunct professor of American Studies at George Washington University in Washington, DC.

In the mood for a laugh? Then come and enjoy a completely improvised comedy show by some of Eckerd’s finest student performers.AMT recently earned a coveted spot at the Chicago Improv Festival March 31 – April 6. Proceeds from their t-shirt sales will help them raise the funds to travel to the Show in Chicago! A dessert reception will be served during this event.

Several sessions will be offered for you to learn more about specific Eckerd programs including international education, career services, and service learning. A complete flier with topics and locations will be available during the President’s Breakfast.

New This Year: The DreamShare Project during the Break-Out sessions Sponsored by Eckerd College Educational Alliance, Career Services, Parent Council, and the Office of Service Learning

The Dream Share Project is an engaging and inspiring presentation that helps students discover and pursue their passions. Students and parents are encouraged to attend the workshop together from 10:15 am – 11:00 am. Parents can then choose to attend a follow-up session with Career Services or Service Learning while students will remain in Miller Auditorium with The DreamShare founders, Chip and Alexis, to participate in an interactive workshop that will transform their passions into an achievable action plan.

The End of Real Food?: GMO OMG

A father of young children, worried about the impact of genetically modified foods on his children, Jeremy Seifert sets out to figure out what “GMO” even means, whether he should be worried, and what, if anything, anybody can do about it. A lighthearted and personal approach to a serious topic that impacts everyone, GMO OMG is an important and timely film.

Yee-haw! It’s time to learn how to line dance or show off your two-stepping talents. Join us for an outdoor late night barbecue and a great night of live music and fun. Enjoy the country rock sounds of The SJ Band while riding a mechanical bull, playing horseshoes, winning prizes at carnival games, and enjoying the entertaining antics of Buster-T-Bone. (You’ve just got to see him to believe him!) Oh, in case that’s not enough for you to kick your heels up, there will be real horses at the GO too! Giddy-up and get to the GO!

11:00 am - 12:00 pm | Think Outside Spiritually
Fox Hall Patio
Professor of Religious Studies and Coordinator of the Faculty Fellows Davina Lopez, and College Chaplains Doug McMahon and Libby Shannon will engage students and their families in a discussion about how the Center for Spiritual Life works with students as they learn how to think and converse about matters of deep importance and meaning in the context of a college setting.

12:15 pm - 2:00 pm | Ya’ll Come Back Soon Lunch
Before heading back to the ranch, enjoy a final round-up and a lunch bonanza at the Waterfront while enjoying the country sounds of local musician Jason Reagle. Jason specializes in incorporating DJ skills into a live acoustic performance. Boat rides on Boca Ciega Bay will be provided, weather permitting.
