Field Trip Policy

In accordance with Eckerd’s field trip policy, there is no reimbursement for travel expenses for students who commute to service-learning sites. If applicable, in choosing one of the established community partners for your QEP service, carefully consider the location of the organization and concurrent transportation expenses, such as fuel, tolls, etc. Some agencies are located a considerable distance from campus, but are of particular value in providing a service experience relevant to the course.

Transportation to Service Site

Enrolled in a Reflective Service-Learning Course but don’t have a car to travel to and from your service site at a partnering agency? Don’t fret! There are alternative modes of transportation available to ensure you fulfill your service commitment:

  1. Carpool
If you have been assigned a group to complete the community component of your reflective service-learning class, try to determine a schedule that works for a few, if not all members of the group so you can commute together.
  2. Sign out an Eckerd van from Campus Activities
Vans are available for student, faculty, and staff use through Campus Activities for clubs, classes, and campus events. Contact Campus Activities about the procedure for gaining access to Eckerd vans. You will be required to complete a brief online course, so be proactive by getting started early. As the vehicles accommodate 12 passengers, it is preferred you travel with a group when taking out a van. Be sure to reserve vans in advance as soon as you know your group’s service schedule. Vans can be reserved by completing the Campus Activities Van Request Form.
  3. Use public transportation
The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) is the local bus system serving Pinellas County. Eckerd is a stop on the route. Consult the system map to see if you can take advantage of public transportation to travel to and from your service site.
  4. Rent via U-Haul Car Share
Rent a vehicle through the new U-HAUL Car Share program. For a reasonable cost, Eckerd students can rent a Toyota Prius hybrid car for personal use. There are two cars on campus for rent, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
