Celebration of Science Fellowship

Winston Churchill’s observation about architecture—“We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us”—is dramatically illustrated by this new facility, which reflects the intellectual fusion of biology and chemistry by inseparably connecting the faculty and labs and classrooms and apparatus for both disciplines: These are not biology wings and chemistry wings—these are science wings . . . and there are spaces everywhere for informal conversation and study and computer docking, places to hang out and talk with fellow students and faculty, places for research and discussion and academic play.

The James Center for Molecular and Life Sciences, named for longtime Eckerd friends Tom James, executive chairman of Raymond James Financial, Inc., and his wife, Mary, is a $25 million, 55,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility housing biology, chemistry and biochemistry programs, as well as new academic initiatives that explore developments at the chemistry-biology interface. Equipped with the latest in eco-conscious innovations, educational technology and scientific instrumentation, the James Center will advance our efforts to prepare tomorrow’s leaders in the sciences, and will quickly become the hub of the Natural Sciences at Eckerd College.
