Environmental Studies major
I graduated from Eckerd College in 2007 with a double major in Environmental Studies and Anthropology. Throughout my Eckerd career I participated in a variety of service events in the community and throughout the world. Some of my favorite memories include building a trail in a Nicaraguan cloud forest, playing with kids in Panama, and working at a no-kill animal shelter in Utah. In the true nature of Service-Learning, all of these experiences infused my education with valuable, real life experiences. I learned more about poverty, structural adjustment, and structural violence in my one month in Nicaragua then I did throughout my entire Eckerd education. The hands-on approach of service translates theories learned in the classroom into action.
I spent the last year working in the Eckerd Service-Learning office as the Environmental Service-Learning Intern. Through this position I organized service events and a spring break trip to engage students in their community. From planting a butterfly garden at a neighboring school to working on a farm at a Buddhist monastery, these experiences were enriching both for me and the participating students.
Shortly I will be moving to Los Angeles to work as a Sustainability Coordinator at Bentley Prince Street. Although my position will focus primarily on environmental activities within the company, I will still be involved in service. Each month I will plan an environmental service event that company employees can attend. This will build our connection with the surrounding community and demonstrate our commitment to corporate social responsibility. Being of service is truly a lifetime commitment.
