Coral Bass

Hello there, my name is Coral Bass and I love volunteering. I can't really explain it. Maybe it has something to do with getting evolved with something bigger than yourself or just knowing that you are helping the greater world or just getting plain old filthy. Either way the volunteering has changed not only my perspective but my entire mindset.

At Eckerd College, I was given the opportunity to get involved in a myriad of service learning experiences. From controlled fire burn clean ups to trail maintenance or playing with orphans to cleaning animal shelters, there was always a service learning experience close at hand. My most memorable experience was in Panama City. No not Panama City, Florida, but Panama City, Panama. We had spent the previous three days building a bridge, hauling rocks from a riverbed to build a raised trail for the rainy season, and dragging gravel up hill. On our fourth day, we went to an orphanage. Now I speak no Spanish and the kids spoke no English but we could converse just fine threw crazy hand jesters. They taught me a hand smacking game that I still remember to this day. It begins "En Me casa de madra..."

The Panama trip was a pivotal moment in my life. From that trip, I learned of the Peace Corps and decided upon graduation that I would explore the world again hoping to help people along the way. Malawi, a tiny country in Southern Africa was my host country. It was beautiful there and the people were so incredibly warm. I was practically adopted into a local family. While there I helped organize a library, talked to locals about deforestation, and taught composting basics. I also spent some time talking about HIV with the local girls. Reluctantly my time there was cut short but it was an unforgettable one. After the Peace Corps I have remained an active volunteer. I have helped with different clean ups and am now assisting with a sea turtle project in the Outerbanks of North Carolina.
