Caracas, Venezuela was my first experience with service. It can't get more exotic than that. I spent my spring break with a small group of Eckerd students building a barbed wire fence, painting walls, and learning about the abandoned children of the country's capital city. It was an experience that changed my life. I continued my service after the trip by volunteering with the Eckerd College Homeless Outreach Group (ECHO), leading and co-leading two more spring break trips, and helping kids with their homework at the Boys and Girls Club. Community service became the most enriching part of my life at Eckerd. After graduating I followed by husband (also an Eckerd grad and former president of ECHO!) to Jamaica to work with a community school teaching math and English. After returning to the States I got a job working as a case manager at St. Joseph Orphanage for children in need. My love for working with children in need has been cultivated by my service experiences at Eckerd. Through the experiences you will have as a volunteer you will learn what is most important in life, caring and helping others.
