What types of service/volunteer activities are/were you involved with at Eckerd?

Into the Streets during autumn term. Service and Freedom in Myanmar, A spring break trail maintenance trip to St. John island. I went to Kenya with two previous Service Learning interns. Eckerd College Hillel (for which I am on the board) occasionally organizes service initiatives like cleaning the water front and teaming up with ECHO.

In what ways did your service experience change you or cause a transformation in your thinking, values or degree/career choice?

Since my first service trip over winter term my entire life has been on a different course. Before getting involved in service learning I had no idea what I wanted to get out of my college experience or what I wanted to do after I graduated. Now since, beginning service work I have a much more concrete idea of the direction that I want to take my life. I have a greater interest in environmental issues than I ever did before.

Please describe your most significant or important service experience while at Eckerd.

As I mentioned above my first venture into service learning was probably one of the most influential experiences of my entire life. Meeting other people who were already invested in helping whatever community they were presently a part of made me feel like there was a whole other demographic of my peers that I had never met before. Meeting like minded and extremely driven people has been the most important and educational part of my college experience. I became less interested in pursuing a career in my major and more interested in environmental studies which I learned about from other people in service learning.

What advice would you give to other current or entering Eckerd students about participating in service?

Whatever sounds interesting but challenging will end up being extremely worth it. Take advantage of every opportunity you are somewhat interested by or curious about.
