What types of service/volunteer activities are/were you involved with at Eckerd?

On Campus Recycling; Boyd Hill; Sweetwater Organic Farm; Tampa Bay Watch; Service Trips to North Carolina, New Orleans, Northern Ireland, and Florida Keys.

In what ways did your service experience change you or cause a transformation in your thinking, values or degree/career choice?

It showed me how much my community needs my help and it has opened my eyes to needs all over the world. I have become a global thinker because of Eckerd, no longer just stuck in my little bubble.

Please describe your most significant or important service experience while at Eckerd.

Going to Northern Ireland, we planned on fixing up the Trauma Centre so it would be a safe haven for those affected by the Troubles. And we did that, but while we were there to work, we also listened to their stories of what had happened to each person we encountered and the history of their country during the Troubles. I think it was more touching to them that we listened to them speak, than the actual work. When it was time to leave they just wanted us to take their story back to America, to have them heard, for them to have a voice. This trip was amazing and touching and I can not wait to go back and see how they're doing.

If you are a graduate, what sort of service do you now do?

I interned at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in the fall of 2011, then got hired so I volunteered there as well on my days off. Now I work 7 days a week, so I can't volunteer, but I'm still helping out by working there.

Service and justice are two topics that can generate stimulating thought and discussion. Describe a time, event or interaction that really engaged your thoughts on service and justice.

When the workers from Immokalee came to speak about their terrible working conditions while picking the tomatoes we eat everyday. Everyone was compelled to have justice brought to them and a service trip to Immokalee was talked about. I remember thinking that we needed to help these people.

What advice would you give to other current or entering Eckerd students about participating in service?

Give back to your community every chance you get! It's what God asks of us, to be servants of the world. You will make new friends, network, and feel great about doing something selfless.
