Around 20 students participated in the Habitat for Humanity build on September 10th organized by the Service-Learning Office. Students made the short drive across the Skyway Bridge to connect with the Manatee chapter of Habitat in Palmetto, Florida. Students and staff spent the morning putting shingles on the roofs of two houses and also dug out ground in preparation for pouring sidewalk concrete.
Habitat for Humanity is a Christian-based non-profit that seeks to help low-income families attain home ownership. The agency was founded by Millard Fuller and supported strongly by former President Jimmy Carter.
Following the Habitat service day, sophomore Ben Bryant re-established a working student group devoted to regular Habitat for Humanity builds. Working in cooperation with the Eckerd College Homeless Outreach, Ben has been successful in recruiting students to volunteer each weekend.
