Autumn Term 2006 proved to be an exciting one, as the Office of Service-Learning hosted two successful events aimed at exciting students about getting involved in their new community. The first was Get Out and Get Active, an informational session that introduced new students to available volunteer opportunities at Eckerd. The session was well-attended and featured an appearance by Mahatma Gandhi, a firm believer in the benefits and necessity of service. The second, Into the Streets, is an Eckerd tradition that combines a day of service with education and reflection. This year, the event saw 320 first-year students (our largest number of participants ever!) volunteer their time at 20 agencies throughout St. Petersburg.
The Office of Service-Learning also welcomed two new staff members for the 2006-2007 school year, Randy Browne and Meghan Cohorst. Randy replaces Josh Orphanidys as the Service-Learning Intern and will be working to alleviate poverty in the Tampa Bay area by coordinating service events and student outreach. Meghan occupies a new position, that of Environmental Service Intern, and will be handling environmental and immigration-related service opportunities as well as managing the campus recycling program.
Finally, we've moved into new offices! Come visit us in our temporary home on the first floor of Omega.
