Honduras: Spring Break 11

One staff member and thirteen students attended the Honduras Service Learning Spring Break Trip. The efforts to fundraise began with candy grams in December and continued to include two late night kitchens. Our goal of raising $750.00 was met with additional assistance from the Eckerd College Organization of Students.
We worked with the International Organization SOS in El Porvenir, Honduras. Our fundraising efforts helped replace a roof of the Caseta at the front of the compound. We also cleaned and painted the interior and exterior of the building. A secondary project consisted of building up a flood retaining wall in front of one of the many homes. In our spare time we played with the 150 orphans ranging in age from 3 to 18 who resided at the compound. The teachers in Honduras were on strike throughout the duration of our stay so we improvised and taught English to those interested in learning.
Our fun day consisted of snorkeling at Cayos Cochinos, an island north east of La Cieba. We spent time snorkeling one of many reefs and our marine science students pointed out the marine wildlife. Over all we had a fantastic experience in Honduras and many of our participants cannot wait to return to the orphanage.
