New Orleans: Spring Break 11

It's been six years since Hurricane Katrina, yet the Lower 9th Ward still looks like a third world country. Houses are still bordered up, marked with spray-painted X's indicating the number of bodies pulled from inside. Yet the people living there persist, despite having lost everything, including family members. Some of gone the extra mile to rebuild their community, such as the people we met working for the Lower 9th Ward Village, where we stayed. The Village hosted events and held things like tutoring sessions for the surrounding community without much outside assistance.
We also worked with the St. Bernard Project, rebuilding a house. There we installed drywall in the ceiling, a huge challenge since many of us had no prior construction experience. Regardless, we got it done and it was a hugely rewarding experience. The family we helped is one step closer to moving back in and the city is one step closer to being whole again.
As I did not have a working camera in New Orleans I have very few picture which were taken on my phone. I've been trying to get my group to send me pictures, but it's looking like I'm going to have to go physically take their cameras in order to get them. Here's what I have for now.
