Venezuela: Spring Break 11

11 strong women along with Service-Learning Director Brian MacHarg served in some of Caracas, Venezuela's worst slums during spring break for the Asociacion Damas Salesianas). Students developed specific English lessons and activities designed to promote cultural exchange. Members of the group also painted various schoolrooms and visited the medical facilities of the organization as well.
The group visited a school in the Petare slum of Caracas, notoriously one of the poorest and most dangerous areas in South America. Under the guidance and protection of the nuns at the school, the group taught lessons and also got to visit in residents' homes. Eckerd students also served at both an elementary and high school in a town on the outskirts of Caracas. The group received warm hospitality from our organizers at the Association and enjoyed a day at the beach and the opportunity to stay in a dormitory run by the organization.
The students were 11 women doing service with the group leader. Largely, the Association is run by and led by strong women who are serious about their work. Many students expressed how great it was for a group of women to do work alongside other strong women leaders.
