Washington, DC - Spring Break 2012

The LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) rights themed Washington, D.C. Service Trip of 2012 volunteered with an organization called Food and Friends, which delivers meals and groceries to individuals with severe illnesses. Originally formed in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the organization has since expanded the reach of its client base to serve people with a variety of life-altering illnesses but has always deeply valued diversity and compassionate care. All of the meals are specially prepared for the unique dietary constraints of each client, which is especially important since some treatments and illnesses make it difficult or unhealthy to eat certain foods. We helped primarily by bagging groceries/meals and delivering them to the clients. It was a very exciting and positive work environment.
When we weren't volunteering, we were exploring the city. We toured many of the monuments and memorials, saw several important buildings, (like the White House!), and visited some of the many museums. Some of the highlights included seeing Holocaust Museum as a group, visiting the Occupy D.C. movement, and walking around the National Mall. We also took time to reflect on our experiences and relate them back to our theme of LGBT rights.
