Puerto Rico - Spring Break 2012

In Puerto Rico we worked with Penitud Iniciativas Eco-educativas on a permaculture farm in Las Marías. We spent a lot of time digging swails and building berms which are major components of permaculture. We learned a lot about permaculture practices and composting. The whole time we were there we ate fresh food, some of which even came from the farm we were working on. The impact of permaculture in the area was huge. The farm was green and prospering, while the next door neighbors’ farms seems barren other than their cash crops; the soil, though, looked dead. One of the neighbors was using machines the whole time we were there to clear out land. This made our work seem pointless, because what takes 5 minutes to destroy with a machine takes hours of manual labor, and then months if not years to replace fully. The organization was great, and I would recommend returning next year.
