Yucatan, Mexico - Spring Break 2012
It was at 3:30am that our week-long adventure to Mexico began. We spent five days volunteering with la Cuidad de la Alegría, or City of Joy. The organization has an impressive reputation in the local community and is made up of eight different homes or centers that cater to a variety of needs.
We spent time volunteering at the Pharmacy, where we discarded five trash bags full of expired medicines and replaced them with newly donated medications. One morning, we were organizing the Bread and Blanket Shelter by restocking shelves and separating garbage from recycling. Our group of twelve helped paint the Women's Shelter and fix the children's playground there as well. Another day we were at the Home for the Elderly; lotioning their feet, taking them for walks, playing games, and doing crafts with them. With all of this, we still found time to play a game of soccer against the local children... and lose to them! The twelve of us had a great time making new friends, practicing our Spanish, and giving a week of service.
