Jamaica: Spring Break 07

Wha’gwaan!! Eleven students, Caitlin Aguero, Becky Barkdoll, Erin Karl, Zack Link, Kr MacDonald, Molly McKay, Devin Pedone, Shannon Ruby, Melanie Schmitt, Natalie Viteri, and Zach Wingrad, traveled to Montego Bay for nine days of service on Jamrock. A Peace Corps Volunteer and Eckerd Alumni, Matt Flege, hosted our week in a small rural town outside of Montego Bay called Over River. There we stayed with the Troupe Family, who graciously introduced us to the Jamaican culture with traditional meals, such as ackee and salt fish and chicken foot soup. We participated in several service projects, including two beach clean ups, renovating a community school, cleaning the St. Joseph’s Revival Restoration Centre, and volunteering at Food For the Poor, a local community charity organization. On non-work days we bonded on the warm beaches of the shores, sailed, and hiked up the Dunn’s River Falls. Our experience exposed us to a new culture and opened out eyes to the importance of international service.
