Immokalee: Spring Break 08

View photos from Immokalee

During Spring Break 2008, 11 Eckerd students spent their time serving in Immokalee, FL. Immokalee is a short distance from Eckerd College, but it feels much further. With most of its population native to Mexico, Spanish is the language most spoken and a majority of the residents are employed as migrant farm workers. It is no secret that the farm workers of Immokalee are unfairly overworked and underpaid. The exploitation of this population is endless, as many counts of slavery have been reported, 8 which have been confirmed by the US Supreme Court. The farm workers unite to fight for fair treatment and wages through the Coalition of Immokalee Workers.

While in Immokalee, the group of 11 girls stayed at the Friendship House, a homeless shelter where they assisted with meal preparation, cleaning, and sorting donated goods. Other service sites included; Guadalupe Homeless Services, Habitat for Humanity (the largest Habitat for Humanity site in the nation), PACE Center for Girls, Guadalupe Daycare Center, and Harvest for Humanity.

After working hard in Immokalee, the group headed to the Everglades to stay at Billie's Swamp Safari, on a native Seminole Indian reservation. While in the Everglades, the group participated in an Air Boat Ride, Swamp Buggy Tour, and learned about plant and animal species native to Florida.
