Service Learning

Peru: Spring Break 09

A group of 11 students decided to spend their Spring Break in Lima, Peru for a week of service learning. We worked with Niño Luz, an organization that is located in the community of 30 de Mayo. We were very fortunate to spend our week staying with the president of Niño Luz, Teofilo Vitor, and his family. We spent the first day seeing sights of Lima, including Miraflores. Our work week including paint classrooms, putting a tin roof on top of a new day care, working in the soup kitchen, and planting a garden. With the importance of sustainability here at Eckerd, we felt it only fitting to leave a legacy behind with the garden that will be able to provide many vegetables for the soup kitchen.

We were able to meet many people that we will forge bonds with forever. Niño Luz is an organization, led by Mr. Vitor, that is working to provide the youth of 30 de Mayo an opportunity at an education and a future. We ended our week with visiting Inca ruins, the Pacific Ocean, and being honored as "madrinas" (godmothers) and "padrinos" (godfathers) of several children in the community. The opportunity to work in Lima and work with an organization that does so much with so little was amazing. This trip was an once-in-a-lifetime experience that was shared with some of the best and brightest students at Eckerd
