Northern Ireland: Spring Break '10

Northern Ireland

View photos from Northern Ireland

Fourteen Eckerd students and staff traveled to Belfast, Northern Ireland to work with the Wave Trauma Centre to assist them in their work during spring break. The Wave Centre works with victims on both sides of the conflict in Northern Ireland historically known as "The Troubles". Volunteers helped the organization with their new Peace Garden and also assisted in the youth and children's programs.

While the group went to Belfast to serve, the group regularly felt like they were the ones being served by the Wave Centre thanks to their hospitality, friendships and willingness to share difficult stories. Eckerd students heard from victims of violence, bereaved mothers and recovering drug addicts--all left in the wake of the conflict.

When not working or interacting with members of the Wave Centre, the group had the chance to see some of the spectacular sights of the area such as the Giant's Causeway, Belfast Castle, live Irish music and a day in Dublin.
