Service Learning

Cuba - Spring Break 2012

12 students traveled with Director of Service-Learning Brian MacHarg to Havana, Cuba to perform service this spring break. The group had the opportunity to see the culturally rich and politically complex country while traveling on a legal visa. The group performed service at a number of locations: They served lunch and visited with the elderly at a church-run seniors program, they painted the hallway of an orphanage, they planted beets at an organic sustainable farm, and assisted at a school for young children. Additionally, the group delivered much-needed supplies such as dental supplies donated by the St. Pete Association of Hygienists as well as toys and school supplies for children. The team also received orientation briefings at several organizations to learn about their work such as at the Martin Luther King Center and at an organization that helps children with cancer.

Team members had the pleasure of staying in "casa particulars", Cuban homes that are licensed to allow overnight visitors. We made friends with our casa hosts and got to know the Centro Habana neighborhood. Additionally, members visited sites of cultural significance such as the Plaza de San Francisco, Museum of the Revolution, Hemingway House and other sites.
