Spring Break Service trip Caracas, Venezuela

The service trip to Venezuela was very exciting and gave the group of Eckerd students a wonderful chance to give back to the people of Venezuela. Many of the students on the trip had never been outside of the country or their comfort zone this trip was a fantastic way for these students to experience the world.

The trip was co-led by Professor Bensadon and student leader Brett Thompson. The trip consisted of eleven Eckerd students all with various backgrounds and ages. The group had superb group morale and bonded instantly. The group worked as if they had been together for ages. Every participant in the group equally contributed in service to the people of Venezuela and where able to experience the wonderful culture of Venezuela.

The group had the opportunity and privilege to volunteer with the Asociacion Dams Salesianas of Don Bosco, a Catholic-based NGO working on bettering the lives of the people in Caracas’ poorest slums through health and vocational training. As a group we were able to see some of the many different facilities and programs that the Asociacion Dams Salesianas offered to the people of Venezuela.

The group actively worked with young children in the slums of Caracas teaching English as a second language. The group also actively helped with administrative process for the organization and various forms of manual labor to rebuild parts of their facilities in the slums of Caracas. Overall the trip was a great success. Each of the group members where able to learn something not only about the world but about themselves as well through their service work in Caracas Venezuela.
