Asheville: Spring Break 06

9 students headed up to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Asheville, NC to work with Habitat for Humanity. Five days of hard work was spent building houses which included powertools, shovels, hammers, and some sweat too. The group worked great together to accomplish building a floor from nothing, putting walls up, and painting the whole inside of another house.
Taking advantage of our free time the group went on a gorgeous hike to Mount Pisgah one evening. Another night the group went for the cultural experience of contra dancing at Warren Wilson College. Contra dancing is a popular hobby to the mountain folks who welcomed us to join with them. Other evenings were spent hanging out together in town or at the church, which was our home base.
Habitat for Humanity is a Christian-based non-profit that seeks to help low-income families attain home ownership. The agency was founded by Millard Fuller and supported strongly by former President Jimmy Carter. The local chapter in Asheville is amazing to the group of dedicated workers reaching out in the community. Many of the families that are moving into houses built by Habitat are from overseas where they have fled from political unrest and no jobs.
The group made the trip so enjoyable with their willingness and fun personalities. Everyone contributed to make the week a success. The participants include: Lauren Dunn, Stephanie Wojcik, Jason Voss, Nicole Bansel, Tom Alves, Josh Mathews-Morgan, Justin Walker, Liz Lapatovich, and Tina Irwin (group leader).
