Costa Rica: Spring Break 09

This spring break eleven Eckerd students traveled to Cahuita, Costa Rica to spend their time working with sloths at Aviarios del Caribe.
The group spent the week working and experiencing the sloth sanctuary. Throughout the time, the students broke up into a few small groups and tackled several projects.
One group spent the morning weeding the organic garden. They spent the day harvesting yard-long beans and Chinese Watercress that is used to feed the one hundred plus sloths.
Others prepared the morning and afternoon meals which included potatoes, carrots, mangos, and leaves.
As Aviarios expands they are expanding and building more cages so that they can tend to more sloths. Students primed and painted the cages. They worked everyday to prepare a new home for future sloths.
Students also worked several other small jobs that keep the organization running. Throughout the time in Cahuita, students stayed right on the preserve and awoke to the howler monkeys and hungry sloths. While not hard at work the students enjoyed zip lining, snorkeling, Cahuita National Park, and Costa Rica's beautiful people.
