Iceland: Spring Break 07

Most college students in their right mind would think of going to the warm beaches of Jamaica, Panama City, or Cancun for spring break but 11 intrepid EC students signed on to spend 9 days serving at the Skaftafell National Forest in Iceland this year.
Braving the snow and cold, students spent the week helping the park with a number of conservation tasks. Students cut down a number of trees that were in danger of dying because of overgrowth. The trimming will help the forest to renew itself and the trees to grow taller. Students also helped build picnic tables, worked with a compost station, and disassembled a bridge that had been washed out by flood.
The group stayed at the volunteer cabin in the park and shared housekeeping and cooking tasks. Students also participated in regular discussions throughout the week regarding service and the environment.
Students spent the week in full time service but had lots to see in the off hours too. The group participated in a glacier walk and ice cave climb as well as hikes throughout the park. Students saw the Aurora Borealis, enjoyed a bonfire, and visited the stunning Jokulsarlon Lake during their off time. Students also enjoyed getting to know the employees at the park and a free day in Reykjavik.
