Peru: Spring Break 08

This past March thirteen Eckerd College students went to Huancayo Peru to participate in a Spring Break Service trip. Huancayo is an impoverished town located in the Andes Mountains. Many of the problems in Huancayo are the result of the violence that plagued the town in the 1980's from the Shining Path terrorist group.
In Huancayo we volunteered with the NGO Tinkuy Peru for 8 days. We stayed with a local family in their volunteer hostel and taught English at local institutions. We taught English at two orphanages, a public school and an after school program. We volunteered approximately seven hours day and participated in many hikes in the surrounding mountains. One day we participated in an environmental cleanup on ancient ruins that has heavy tourist traffic. We hiked up ancient ruins on mountain tops, visited Torre Torre a unique rock formation and participated in a six hour glacier hike high up in the Andes Mountains.
