Virginia: Spring Break 09

View photos from Virginia

A group of 11 Eckerd students went to Staunton River State Park in Scottsburg, Virginia for their 2009 Spring Break. The trip was lead by a student who went on the same trip last year and decided to lead a trip back to the park. The major projects that the group worked on included painting the inside and outside of a staff residence, removing trash on the road 1 mile before the park entrance, mulching a playground, as well as building a spur trail to a fishing spot.

The first day started out rainy, so the students painted the inside of, sealed the basement off, and stripped the wall paper off of a staff residence just outside the park entrance. After the rainy start, the next day cleared up and they were able to build a trail leading down to a fishing spot on one of the lakes within the state property. After they finished the trail, half the group set wooden posts while the other half helped clear another trail.

On the third day, the students were finally able to start painting the outside of the staff house and that night they had a barbeque for the some of the park staff. On Thursday, after many back and forth trips to the mulch pile, they mulched the playground located behind the brand new visitors center. After work those two days, a group of students were also able to take out canoes and explore the waterways of the park and on Thursday night, the park staff took the group out to dinner. On Friday the group spent the morning picking up trash along the road a mile from the park entrance and in the afternoon, they finally finished painting the staff residence, while two people left to clear a fire boundary.

Overall, the trip was a great success and once again the group enjoyed working with the park staff for the week. The work that the group did would have taken the park staff weeks to do. It also helped the staff prepare for the park's summer season, which is it's busiest time. Many thanks go out to the staff of Staunton River State Park for hosting the group and for all their hard work as well, which includes Josh Ellington, Nathan Younger, Adam Layman, Reed Stanley, Josh Hollingsworth, and Brent Shepherd.
