ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Director of Athletics
Bob Fortosis announced the addition of women's
golf to the Eckerd College athletic program on Wednesday afternoon.
Eckerd will begin competition in the 2006-07 academic year. Eckerd
will discontinue its Cross Country program.
Former PGA professional Bill Buttner will
spearhead the Eckerd women's golf program and become a full-time
member of the athletic department staff. Buttner is entering
his fourth season as the head coach of the men's golf program,
which is nationally No. 32 in the latest NCAA Division II poll. He
was named Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year in 2005, when
the Tritons place third in the conference and Niclas Rockmann
earned medalist honors. He enjoyed a 15-year playing career
on the PGA Tour and Nike Tour that was highlighted by five U.S.
Open appearances.
"We are fortunate to have a coach of Bill Buttner's character and
experience leading our golf programs," Fortosis said. "Florida is
synonymous with golf and we want our programs to reflect the
environment in which we live."
Eckerd is a NCAA Division II affiliate and charter member of the
Sunshine State Conference. The SSC has seven members competing in
women's golf and have combined to win nine national
championships.
Located on the waterfront of St. Petersburg, Florida, Eckerd
College is a private, coeducational college of liberal arts and
sciences. Founded in 1958, Eckerd is a pioneer of responsible
innovation - developing programs that have been adopted nationwide
and earning the college an international reputation for academic
excellence. Eckerd is one of only 40 schools listed in Loren Pope's
Colleges That Change Lives and, in 2003, became one of the youngest
colleges to receive a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. Eckerd's Leadership
Development Institute executive education program, Academy of
Senior Professionals at Eckerd College (ASPEC), and offerings
through Senior College and Elderhostel identify the college as a
national leader in continuing education.
