Baseball Wins Final Series of 2008

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd College baseball team ended their season in style as they split a doubleheader with visiting Rollins College. Combine the split with last night's victory and Eckerd claims the final Sunshine State Conference series of the 2008 season. The Tritons dropped the opener 21-0 but rebounded behind some fine pitching to claim the finale 7-3.

After struggling through the first game, the Tritons (16-33, 4-20) handed the ball to senior Tony Capoverdi who was playing in his final game of his collegiate career. Capoverdi, a native of Winter Park, the same city that Rollins College calls home, got the last laugh as he went the distance for the only time this year. He allowed three runs on eight hits and three walks in seven innings to send Triton fans home happy.

After splitting lone runs in the first two innings, the Tritons blasted the game open in the third when senior Derek Makowski led off with a double to center field. After the Tars loaded the bases and changed pitchers, Eckerd's Matt Heller greeted the new hurler with a two RBI double down the left field line. When the inning was in the books, the Tritons had plated four runs on two hits and taken a commanding 5-2 lead.

The Tars (29-24-1, 9-14) would manage to plate two more runs but the EC defense would make one more stand this season to claim the victory.
