Eckerd Men's Basketball Ends 08-09 with Upset Victory Over Rollins

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - After struggling for most of the season while battling injuries, the Eckerd Tritons (13-14, 5-11 SSC) have much to look forward to in 2009-10 as they fittingly said farewell to three graduating seniors with a rousing 81-74 upset victory over the Rollins Tars (18-9, 10-6 SSC) in front of 974 screaming fans on Saturday afternoon at the McArthur Center. The win follows a gutsy come-from-behind overtime victory at Saint Leo on Wednesday.

Rollins appeared to be headed to victory in the first half as a three-pointer by Zach Pancratz gave the Tars a 27-14 lead with 10:23 remaining. A made three-pointer by John Harper, however, would get the Tritons started on a 29-17 over the final 9:47 of the half, trimming the Tars’ lead to just 44-43 and swinging momentum to the Tritons at halftime.

Eckerd Men's Basketball Scores Come-from-Behind OT Win at Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla. - Needing to run the table just to keep its postseason hopes alive, the Eckerd Tritons (12-14, 4-11 SSC) received a clutch three by freshman swingman Kornilous Donnell with 10 seconds left to force an extra session en route to a come-from-behind 84-77 overtime victory over the Saint Leo Lions (14-15, 7-9 SSC) on Wednesday night at the Marion Bowman Activities Center.

Despite holding up its end of the bargain, Eckerd did not receive help that it needed to stay alive as, just moments after the final buzzer sounded in Saint Leo, the Florida Tech Panthers were putting the finishing touches on a win over the Nova Southeastern Sharks in Davie, Fla., thus mathematically eliminating the Tritons from postseason contention.
