Lone Free Throw Propels Men's Basketball Over Tampa

Men's BasketballTAMPA, Fla. - The Eckerd College men's basketball team got a single free throw from freshman Chris Gray with two seconds left as the Tritons defeated the SSC's top-ranked University of Tampa 87-86 in Sunshine State Conference action from UT's Martinez Center on Wednesday night.

Eckerd (17-7, 9-4 SSC) led for the majority of the first half, stretching a close game to a 37-23 lead with 3:13 to go until halftime. The Spartans (16-7, 9-5 SSC) closed the half outscoring Eckerd 11-0 in the final three minutes of the first stanza.

Men's Basketball Beats Rival Mocs

PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd College men's basketball team looks to be on a hot streak at the right time of the season as they upended the Sunshine State Conference's top-ranked team dominating Florida Southern 74-60 in conference action from a rowdy McArthur Center on Wednesday night.

The Tritons (15-7, 8-4 SSC) looked overmatched in the opening minutes as the Mocs jumped out to a 15-4 lead before the first media break. It wasn't until after the second media timeout that Eckerd's five awakened, going on a 12-0 run to take a two-point lead with 4:12 remaining in the first half.

Morris Earns Conference Player of the Week Honors

PETERSBURG, Fla. - Eckerd College senior guard Damone Morris has been selected as the Sunshine State Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending February 10. Morris led the Tritons to a pair of conference wins, averaging over 20 points and six rebounds per contest.

In a 62-47 win at Barry, Morris posted 22 points, seven rebounds, and two steals and in an 81-63 win versus Nova Southeastern, he had 19 points, five rebounds, and two assists.

Morris Drops in 32 as Men's Basketball Routs Lions

Men's BasketballST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd College men's basketball team opened their game against Saint Leo University with a 30-7 run en route to a 98-53 final in Sunshine State Conference action on Wednesday night at the McArthur Center.

Senior guard Damone Morris topped his 27-point performance against Tampa with a 32-point outing against the Lions (7-9, 1-5 SSC). In only 26 minutes of action, he shot a remarkable 14-of-16 from the field with his only two misses from past the 3-point arc. His 32-points marks an SSC high so far in 2008.

Men's Basketball Gets 27 from Morris in Win

Men's Basketball ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Behind 27 points from senior Damone Morris the Eckerd College men's basketball team overpowered visiting University of Tampa 80-72 in Sunshine State Conference action at a rowdy McArthur Center on Wednesday evening.

The first 14 minutes of action saw a back-and-forth battle with neither team willing to surrender more than a four point lead until Eckerd managed to go on the first run of the contest. The Tritons got consecutive treys from seniors Josh King and two from Morris that helped the Tritons jump out to an 11 point lead as EC went on a 14-3 run in the first half.

Tritons Give Fans Early Present with Win Over Palm Beach Atlantic

Men's BasketballWEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Eckerd College men's basketball team gave Triton fans an early Christmas present as they traveled to south Florida and soundly defeated host Palm Beach Atlantic 91-68 on Wednesday night. The second win in a row, and their seventh in the last eight games, improves EC to 7-3 overall as they are beginning to take on the form of last years' NCAA South Regional finalist. PBA falls to 1-9 overall.

Eckerd was very sluggish out of the gate as they found themselves down 11-3 with only four minutes elapsed in the game. With things looking grim for the good guys, Eckerd would respond with an 18-6 run to grab a lead they would not surrender for the remainder of the contest.

Tritons Roll Through Thanksgiving Classic

Men's BasketballST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - It was another great day to be a Triton on Saturday as both basketball teams posted wins in the final day of the 2007 Eckerd College Thanksgiving Classic. The women easily handled Ohio Valley University, defeating the Fighting Scots 92-69 to remain a perfect 4-0 to start the year.

The men’s game was not as easy as the Tritons overcame a five-point deficit with less than two minutes to play as they defeated Valdosta State 81-78 to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Men's Basketball Ranked Second in Preseason Conference Voting

Coach Tom RyanORLANDO, Fla. - The Eckerd College men's basketball team garnered three first-place votes but it was not enough to put them atop the preseason Sunshine State Conference basketball polls released on Wednesday.

Defending SSC Co-Champion Rollins has been tabbed the preseason favorite to again win the Sunshine State Conference men's basketball title, it was announced Thursday by Commissioner Michael J. Marcil.
