Tritons Finish Third at SSC Championships

TAMPA, Fla. - The Eckerd College men's tennis team finished third in the weekend's Sunshine State Conference Tennis Championships, held at Hillsborough Community College. The team came into the tournament seeded third.
After losing to tournament champion Lynn University on Friday morning, the Eckerd men faced fifth-seeded Florida Southern College on Saturday morning, a team they had edged 5-4 earlier in the season. The Tritons got into some trouble early in the match when their number one doubles team of Elmar Koenig and Javier Romero, who are ranked #2 in the nation, were upset 9-7 by Florida Southern's Michael Knoedler and Alex Thesleff. But Sanjar Shodiev and David Lopez pulled off a 9-8 number three doubles win to put the Tritons ahead 2-1 after doubles play, and Eckerd pulled away to win 6-2.

The team will await final word from the NCAA regarding post-season play, but are likely to head to Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla. The regionals are scheduled to begin on May 4.
Men's Tennis Gets Crucial Win Over Rollins

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd College men's tennis team sewed up the third seed in next week's Sunshine State Conference Tournament with a crucial 6-3 win over #12 Rollins College Friday afternoon at the Turley Athletic Complex.
The Tritons (16-3, 4-2 SSC) found themselves down 1-2 after doubles play. Each doubles match ended with a 9-7 score, but only the #2 ranked doubles powerhouse of Javier Romero and Elmar Koenig managed a win, outlasting #9 Carlos Custodio and Brian Compton at #1 doubles. Romero and Koenig battled back from 3-5 to take the match.
But Eckerd bounced back and took five singles matches to finish the day. #8 Sebastian Niedermayer topped #11 Custodio 6-3, 6-1. #15 Koenig cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Adrian Tan, and Romero made quick work of Brian Compton, 6-2, 6-0. Nikola Vujovic and David Lopez pulled out hard fought three-set wins at #3 and #6 singles, respectively.

Earlier this season, the Eckerd women's tennis team beat Rollins 5-4, marking the first time in history that Eckerd has swept the men's and women's season series from the Tars. The Tritons will play their final home match of the season on Monday when they host Florida Gulf Coast University at 2:00 p.m.
