Joe McCauley

Eckerd College women’s soccer coach Joe McCauley enters his fifth season coaching the Tritons.

McCauley's 2006 women's soccer team went 5-11-1 overall, posting the best record in six years.  Although the Tritons finished in the bottom half of the Sunshine State Conference they still had some very impressive results including a 1-1 draw with powerhouse Florida Tech and a 1-0 victory over Lynn University.  McCauley also led his team to a season sweep over Palm Beach Atlantic, winning 3-1 on the road, and winning 5-1 in the season's final game.

McCauley came to the Tritons via the University of Northern Illinois where his work with the Northern Illinois goalkeepers helped them post a 2.15 goals-against-average and three shutouts in 2002. His five-year (1998-2002) tenure there included a Mid-American Conference championship in 1998 when the Huskies went 14-7-0 overall and registered four shutouts – three coming in a six-match winning streak in the middle of the season.

Prior to Northern Illinois, McCauley spent five seasons as the head women’s soccer coach at Bellarmine College in Louisville, Ky. He started as an assistant to men’s soccer coach Dave Fernandez. McCauley worked with the Knights’ goalkeepers in 1991 before he assumed the reigns of the women’s team in 1992, posting a 33-50-2 career ledger with the fledging BC program.

McCauley guided Bellarmine to back-to-back winning seasons in 1995 and 1996, reaching the semifinal of the Great Lakes Valley Conference post-season tournament in 1995 with a 10-7-0 record. BC followed that with an 8-7-2 record in 1996, falling to national Division II power University of Missouri-St. Louis in the GLVC quarterfinals.

McCauley was a four-year letter winner at the University of Louisville and was named the Cardinals’ Most Valuable Player in 1987, along with earning Metro Conference All-Tournament honors. That season, McCauley registered a 2.06 goals-against-average as the team’s co-captain. In his senior campaign, he posted a 1.60 GAA. His coaching career began at the University of Louisville in 1990 with the task of training goalkeepers for the Cardinals’ men’s program.

Since 1994, the Louisville native has been active with the Olympic Development Program, including teams in Kentucky and Illinois as state head coach. In that capacity, he was responsible for the selection and training of the state’s top talent for competition at the regional level, and his 1985 Illinois State Team won the ODP National Championship.

McCauley earned a bachelor of science in physical education from Louisville in 1992.

He currently resides in St. Petersburg with his girlfriend Jaime Adkins and their two dogs J.J. and Maggie.
