VARSITY SAILING TEAM
The Triton Sailing Team is recognized as a varsity team by Eckerd College and is a part of the Waterfront Program.

HISTORY
The Eckerd College Sailing Team was formed in the early 70's and was a founding member of the Southeastern Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SEISA). Today, the team is a strong competitor in the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SAISA) and is member of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA).

TEAM MEMBERSHIP
The team is co-ed and is comprised of an average of 24 students and 2 coaches. Membership is open to full-time undergraduate students with at least a 2.0 grade point average. Members are selected in the beginning of the fall semester by the coaches following an intensive Autumn Term training and evaluation period. However, interested sailors may apply for membership throughout the school year.

COMPETITION
With Florida's tropical climate, the team practices 3-4 times per week during the entire fall and spring seasons. With full financial support and a healthy regatta schedule, most sailors have the opportunity to compete in 2-3 regattas per month. Most of the season, the Triton Sailing Teams are competing in 2-3 events on any given weekend. During the fall semester, most intersectional and district events are limited to doublehanded, singlehanded and sloop (3 person) events while the spring term focuses solely on doublehanded fleet and team racing events. In addition to these 4 disciplines, Eckerd also competes in a handful of "women only" singlehanded and doublehanded events throughout the season. The Tritons compete with the best collegiate sailors in the U.S., traveling nationally to more than 40 events per year.

NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
It is the commitment and dedication of the Tritons that have earned the team a berth to countless ICSA North American Championships over the years. Eckerd hosts 6-8 ICSA and ISSA (high school) events each season. In 1999, the Waterfront Program hosted 4 very successful ISSA and ICSA Spring North American Championships. Eckerd College has also been chosen as the site for the 2003 ICSA and ISSA Singlehand North American Championships in November.
