Reflective Service Learning

Broadening your worldview

We’re so convinced of the transformative power of giving that we ask every student to take at least one designated Reflective Service Learning (RSL) course, which includes at least 20 hours of service, before graduation.

Service meets learning

Unlike volunteering or community service, these classes emphasize the connection between meaningful service and learning. Participants combine service with written reflection. The idea is not to just do something good but to think about the social, political, and economic issues at play in your service project.

For example, you and your classmates might paint a mural for a nearby nursing home or create a marketing plan for Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park! Courses are coordinated by our Office of Service Learning and offered in every major.

Students might help build a community garden (above) with the Edible Peace Patch, volunteer with Tampa Bay Watch on coastal cleanup projects or plan charity events for Creative Clay, a local arts center.
