Their story began in the mid-1960s, when Dick Bredenberg was a professor of secondary education in the early years of then-Florida Presbyterian College. His wife, Huldah, was a grade-school teacher and also involved in the life of the College, hosting students at their home and starting a folk dance club. When Dick took a sabbatical and traveled to Japan to teach at a girls\u2019 school there, Huldah and the family came too. That stay became the foundation for the Eckerd Kinjo Japanese exchange program.<\/p>\n

Three of the four Bredenberg children\u2014Ingrid Bredenberg \u201970, a strategic leadership coach; Eric Bredenberg \u201975, retired from the publishing industry; and Sigrid Flor \u201980, a massage the first generation of Bredenberg children, but, according to them, the education they received was priceless.<\/p>\n

\u201cEckerd was probably the biggest outside influence\u2014other than my parents\u2014on my whole life,\u201d Eric says. \u201cEckerd was transformational, and in so many ways, it was perfect for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really did lay the groundwork of a purposeful life, of one of service,\u201d says Ingrid, who was honored in 2024 with the College\u2019s Grover C. Wrenn \u201964 Service Award.<\/p>\n

Sigrid\u2019s children\u2014Tiffany Flor Fisher \u201914, a mom and data analyst, and Leif Flor \u201916, a software engineer\u2014also went on to graduate from Eckerd.<\/p>\n

When Tiffany was deciding where to go to college\u2014not a foregone conclusion!\u2014she remembers Eric asking her, \u201cDo you want to grow primarily as a person or an academic?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy path became clear. It was time to grow holistically as a person,\u201d she recalls. She chose Eckerd, where she also met her husband, Trey Fisher \u201913.<\/p>\n

They all traveled as students\u2014Eric spent a year and a half abroad in Japan, Sigrid traveled to Japan as well, and Ingrid recalls hitchhiking across Europe carrying her comparative literature textbooks in a backpack. Decades later, Tiffany and Leif took their own trips\u2014Tiffany to Japan and Ecuador, and Leif to New Zealand.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone was impacted in a very special way that has made some major change in their life direction,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Sigrid\u00a0 says she first learned to be a good listener at Eckerd, and says much of what her clients value in a massage is the time to be heard.<\/p>\n

\u201cEckerd taught me there was value in being able to be comfortable with all types of people, and to know that we\u2019re all one despite our differences,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

At the 2025 Reunion Weekend<\/a>, the entire family, along with some of Dick\u2019s former students, gathered on campus to plant a tree near the library<\/a> in memory of Dick and Huldah and all that they meant to Eckerd.. They shared stories and memories, like Dick riding a bike around campus distributing gardenias to college staff, and\u00a0 the culture of giving that Dick and Huldah cultivated[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”48″][image_with_animation image_url=”5174″ image_size=”full” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”Fade In” animation_easing=”default” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”” img_link_large=”yes” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]The Bredenbergs stand alongside the tree planted in their family\u2019s honor on campus.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”32″][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]Ultimately, the Bredenberg and Flors say that their connection to Eckerd is about more than their family ties.<\/p>\n
